 Rating 8.5

on and off

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:

I continue to be unsure that the FOTD images are actually reaching the Fractint list, but I have received no inquiries about missing FOTD's, so I assume that the FOTD's are being posted even though I am not receiving them back.  If the messages are not reaching the list, I guess I'm talking to myself.  (No problem -- I enjoy talking to those who never disagree with me.)

I rated today's image at an 8.5  The rating might be a little liberal, but the image is like nothing I have seen in the Mandelbrot set, and at least in my opinion, rates an honest 8.5.

The scene of the action lies in a kind of spiral in the basin of a larger minibrot in the East Valley of the largest minibrot on the main stem of the large minibrot on the negative X-axis of the Mandelbrot set.  Those who can follow all these directions know exactly where today's image is located.  Another way to find the location is to turn off the logmap, back out to ground level of the M-set while keeping the coordinates unchanged, and zoom in from there.

Being short of spare time lately, I put only a little extra effort into the coloring.  Luckily, Fractint came through with an unusually good palette that needed only a minor tweaking.  I guess the extra half point in the rating should go to the Fractint program rather than myself.

The name "On And Off the Stem" indicates that the scene of today's image lies very close to the main stem of the M-set, though not exactly on it.

The calculation time of 2-3/4 seconds is no mistake.  One careless blink of the eyes will cause the calculation process to be totally missed.

Viewing the finished image on the currently active FOTD web site
at:

will make the viewing process immune to blinking.

Wednesday turned out to be quite a pleasant day here at Fractal Central, with lots of sun and a temperature of 39F +4C.  The fractal cats took full advantage of the sun while it was shining on the shelf in the southwest window.  The day of the humans was busy but not as busy as some days have been.  The next FOTD will be posted as always in 24 hours.  The Mandelbrot set seems to have taken on a new life these past few days, so we'll probably stay with it a while longer.  Until then, take care, and the last time I checked, we were in no danger of running short of fractals.
