Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:

Now we're getting somewhere in the ratings race.  The rating of today's image is up to a 7.5, and it's all thanks to that warhorse of warhorses, the Mandelbrot set, plus a bit of extra work on my part, for which I rewarded myself an extra half point.

Once again, the Mandelbrot set brings a surprise.  The scene lies in the basin of a larger minibrot in the East Valley of the large minibrot on the west branch of the filament extending from the large period-3 bud on the north side of the main bay of the Mandelbrot set.

I named the image "Unlikely Minibrot" because it looks more like a scene in a complex fractal generated by the MandAutoCritInZ formula than a scene in the classic Mandelbrot set itself.

A good part of the effect is due to the coloring, which I did spend some extra time on.  However the underlying pattern is unusual enough even with no extra coloring effort.

The calculation time of 2 seconds is no mistake.  On my machine, the image is finished before the monitor can switch to VESA mode.  The small effort of setting up and running the included parameter file may be avoided by viewing the already-calculated image on the currently active FOTD web site at:

The original FOTD web site is still available at:

An additional dusting of snow fell overnight Monday here at Fractal Central.  The snow ended early Tuesday morning, and the clouds cleared shortly after, but the temperature never rose above 25F -4C.  The fractal cats parked themselves as close to the heat as possible most of the time.

With spring nearing, the commercial work continues heavy here at FC, making things rather hectic for all concerned, the cats included.  I will find the next FOTD image, write the discussion and post it within 24 hours.  Whether it reaches the Fractint list is another story.  Until next time, take care, and be ready for anything.
